Abstract
|

|
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has rapidly become a leading research tool in the investigation of multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent technical advances made progress in understanding the substrate and mechanisms underlying the development and evolution of focal lesions and ¡®diffuse¡¯ damage in MS as well as the functional consequences of such structural abnormalities. Higher-field MR scanners and new positron emission tomography (PET) radio ligands has provided new insights into cellular and pathophysiological abnormalities, and would be valuable in future therapeutic trials. This review summarizes advanced MRI approaches for the investigation of lesion burden and understanding of the pathophysiology of MS.
